Helping people help themselves into jobs, into small businesses and out of poverty is a concept that’s working. We’d like to invite you to help us do even more.
Small business owners of all types come to ACCION Texas Inc.
Our clients are small business owners and entrepreneurs of all kinds. From restaurants to barbershops and construction companies to day-care centers, an increasingly a wide array of businesspeople are seeking the capital and business services ACCION has to offer. These small business owners create jobs, buy equipment and stimulate economic activity in their communities with their loans.
To fish, or buy the pond?
“You can give someone a fish,” says Janie Barrera, CEO of ACCION Texas Inc., “and it’s food for a day. Teach that person to fish and there’s new opportunity. Provide the loan to buy the pond, and you have changed a community.”
A lifeline for banks
Banks are some of our greatest partners, referring borrowers who are too small or too “risky” to qualify for a bank loan. Regional banks have welcomed ACCION into their communities, helping us grow and expand across Texas, Louisiana, and the Mississippi Delta.
Growing demand for loans
Over the years, the size of our loans has steadily increased, to the point that today we are able to offer loans from $500 to $250,000, as well as even larger SBA 504 loans to established businesses. This growing demand necessitates an increased capacity for lending. ACCION ensures that the funds we have available to lend meet the needs of our clients through grants and contributions from socially responsible foundations, corporations, investors and individuals.
Celebrating success and looking to the future
We take great pride in the recognition and support we have received from future-minded banks and organizations. In 2008 Citi committed $30 million over five years to purchase ACCION loans, a one-of-a-kind deal that allowed us to expand across the nation. In early 2011, Chase Bank donated $5 million for loans and technical assistance for small business. At the end of 2011, Starbucks and the Opportunity Finance Network teamed up and chose ACCION to be one of the inaugural recipients of funds from their collaborative “Create Jobs for USA” initiative. The support of community partners and individual donors who believe credit and business opportunities should be available to everyone, and that microlending is a far more valuable and effective strategy than charity, is vital to the continued success of our hardworking clients.
